This is the view of Kilauea Iki crater from the lookout on Crater Rim Drive. The cinder cone in the background is Pu'u Pua'i, the site of the 1959 eruption. To put things in perspective, this crater is a mile long, 3000 feet wide and 380 feet deep. During the 1959 eruption lava fountains as high as 1900 feet spewed from the base of Pu'u Pua'i.
